Syria's President Bashar al-Assad is denying allegations that chemical weapons were used.

A senior military official says Israeli military intelligence estimates that Assad has "between one and three tons" of chemical weapons.

The global chemical weapons watchdog has said tests confirmed a nerve agent was used in an attack in Syria earlier this month that killed almost 90 people, and France said it had evidence the Syrian Government was responsible.

The regime in Damascus may be calculating that the U.S. would be more reluctant to strike in close proximity to the Russian troops and their anti-aircraft systems.

Although Israel has largely remained on the sidelines of the six-year civil war in Syria, it has carried out a series of airstrikes on what it suspected were arms shipments sent from Iran bound for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has repeatedly denied his government has any chemical weapons stocks after surrendering its chemical arsenal to an global watchdog in 2013 after the deaths of hundreds from sarin exposure in a rebel-held suburb of Damascus in 2013.

Israel believes that Syrian military commanders ordered the sarin gas attack on Khan Sheikhoun with Assad's knowledge.

"Using sarin shows that [Assad is] deeply frustrated, and even though he has used chemical weapons in the past, this use created a change", the officer said, Haaretz reported. CNN said according to one U.S. defense official, Syria appears to have moved most, if not all, of its aircraft to the Latakia province.

Also on Wednesday, Israeli defense officials said Assad still has up to 3 tons of chemical weapons.

President Donald Trump's popularity has risen slightly since the missile strike on Syria earlier this month, but most Americans still view him negatively.

Ahead of disarmament, Assad's government disclosed it had some 1,300 tons of chemical weapons, including sarin, VX nerve agent and mustard gas. Sarin disrupts the nervous system, and one drop can be fatal.

The United States - which fired 59 cruise missiles at a Syrian airfield on April 7 after Syria allegedly used chemical weapons against a civilian neighborhood - has also sanctioned some Syrian entities and individuals. However, doubts soon emerged over whether all of the regime's armaments or production facilities were declared and destroyed.

In an unprecedented step, the OPCW's executive council in November condemned Syria's use of toxic weapons - the council's first public condemnation of a member of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
