Those facts are just a bare-bones breakdown of trying to figure out the puzzle that is the National Football League schedule, but it does provide a little insight into the Thanksgiving slate of games that we'll see in 2017.

For the first time, the Washington Redskins will host a game on Thanksgiving night and the Giants will be the opponent, playing at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. on November 23, according to the Washington Post.

Wellington Mara, the late Giants patriarch and co-owner, despised playing on Thanksgiving. The Redskins have previously faced just the Cowboys (eight times) and the Lions (once) on Thanksgiving with a 2-7 all-time record. Tesfatsion also reported the game will occupy the evening time slot, which is fitting considering the intrigue surrounding this classic NFC East matchup.

Though they have never hosted, the Redskins have been involved in nine Thanksgiving Day games, in part because the Cowboys, a division rival, historically play on the holiday. The NFL added a third game on Thanksgiving night in 2006.

The last time that the Redskins played back-to-back Thanksgiving Day games was in 1973, against Detroit, and in 1974, against Dallas.
