India cancels maritime talks with Pak over Jadhav row

The Times of India (TOI) has reported that India on Friday called off talks between the two neighbouring countries on maritime security which was scheduled to be held on April 17.

The Jadhav episode could further strain the India- Pakistan ties which were hit after attacks in Pathankot and Uri by Pakistan-based terrorists past year.

Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale on Friday asked Pakistan to provide a copy of the chargesheet filed and the judgment given against Jadhav while strongly raising this issue.

The move comes a day after Pakistan denied consular access to Jadhav for the 14th time.

Pakistan has labelled Mr Jadhav a R&AW agent and a military court has awarded him the death sentence for carrying out sabotage and espionage activities in Karachi and Balochistan. Pakistan claims its security forces had arrested Jadhav from the restive Balochistan province on March 3 previous year after he reportedly entered from Iran. While Pakistan claimed that Jadhav is a RAW spy, India has maintained that he was retired from the Navy in 2002.

According to the Indian Foreign Ministry, Jadhav was kidnapped in 2016 from Iran while his subsequent detention had never been "explained credibly" by the Pakistani side.

Theresa May's snap election: Smart, risky or cynical?
A total of 174 Labour MPs voted in favour of holding an election, meaning dozens appear to have chosen to abstain from voting. Recent opinion polls put the Conservatives about 20 points ahead of Labour, the main opposition party led by Jeremy Corbyn.

India April 13 criticized Pakistan for its refusal to share Jadhav's location and details of his condition, and said that the worldwide norm to provide consular access was not followed. We need to bear in mind that a sham trial has taken place. "Kulbushan was involved in both espionage and terrorist/sabotage activities resulting in the loss of many lives and damage to property", Aziz said.

Former naval officer Kulbhushan was convicted by a Pakistani military court for spying and fomenting unrest in the province of Balochistan.

High level officials dealing with the case indicated that the logical next step would be for the Jadhav family to reach out to the Pakistani authorities and lodge a petition against the death sentence delivered by a military court of Pakistan.

But Pakistan hit back by saying that Jadhav carried two passports, one with a Hindu name and the other bearing a Muslim name. Now clearly it appears that a cover up is taking place about it. I can not decide what the two dignitaries will discuss. It reeks of lies...

"My heart goes out to him..." I have enormous faith in the strong leadership of our country...

Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya also condemned the decision.
