Former NFL player Aaron Hernandez and defence attorney wait in the courtroom during the jury deliberation in his first murder trial in April, 2015.
As the sports world reacts to Aaron Hernandez's suicide Wednesday morning, numerous details about the former New England Patriots tight end's troubled life have filtered out.
Hernandez, 27, was found by guards at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley just after 3 a.m., Department of Correction spokesman Christopher Fallon said in a statement.
Hernandez was in the process of appealing the conviction, which came with a life sentence with no possibility of parole.
"Once every two or three months a prisoner commits suicide in MA", said state Senator James Eldridge, whose district includes two prisons including the one where Hernandez died. The former tight end was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later.
"He's going to be hanging onto the hope and prayer that someday his other case will be overturned", Boston attorney Phillip A Tracy Jr. said Friday after Hernandez's not guilty verdict.

His friend says he'll remember Hernandez as a happy, goofy man who was always trying to make people laugh. Hernandez later transferred to a different prison, where letters to fans appeared to show him in a better mental state. "Words can not express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation", a team statement says. Communications Director Peter Missouri said Senator Eldridge is calling for an oversight hearing into Hernandez's death, specifically to identify how the prison was staffed and how solitary check-ins were conducted. Massachusetts State Police is investigating his death.
The world caught a glimpse in the courtroom the other day, where it must have occurred to Hernandez that he would never be a normal dad, and that all of these tribulations would take a toll upon his own daughter. Geoghan was murdered in prison in 2003, and all charges against him were dropped in the aftermath.
Fallon said he's not aware of any suicide note written by Hernandez.
Hernandez had reportedly "attempted to block his door with various items", according to the statement.
Much of Hernandez's family still lives in Bristol, and a home on Lake Avenue belonging to his uncle was searched during the investigation into the murder of Odin Lloyd. Hernandez's lawyer is launching his own investigation into his death.
