Early eagles help Dufner into RBC Heritage lead

Jason Dufner had two eagles on the way to a 6-under 65 and a one-shot lead Saturday heading into the final round of the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The Englishman has recorded six top-threes in his last eight appearances at the venue and has a chance to top that run with victory this week after joining Canada's Graham DeLaet on 10 under par.

DeLaet was at one over on his first seven holes of the second round until a birdie on the hard par-four eighth hole and an eagle on No. 9, also a par 4 where the Canadian bounced his approach shot into the cup.

Luke Donald continued his impressive form over the Harbour Town Golf Links as a second round 67 gave him a share of the halfway lead at the RBC Heritage. His 66-68 is the just the second time in seven career visits to Harbour Town he's opened with two sub-70 rounds.

Poulter and Simpson each shot 68.

Cameron Smith had an even-par 71 to be the best-placed Australian at five under in a tie for 20th.

DeLaet had never finished better than 14th in six previous trips here. He has three career second-place finishes on the PGA Tour but has never won an individual event.

Bryan, a SC native who played college golf for the Gamecocks, was four shots behind entering the day and moved into contention with four consecutive birdies on the front nine.

DeLaet plodded through the first part of his round until dropping his approach on the 461-yard eighth hole within 15 feet and made the putt.

Meanwhile, France's Gregory Havret shot a second straight round of 70 and moved one stroke clear on six under par at the Trophee Hassan II's halfway point despite finishing with back-to-back bogeys.

A tie for 14th a year ago is DeLaet's lone top-40 in his five Heritage appearances, though he thoroughly enjoys the course.

Poulter, playing on a major medical extension, is on the clock to keep his card and needs about $145,000 in his next two events to maintain his playing status and is off to a strong start.

Bob Tway bogeyed two of the last three holes for a seven-under 65 and the first-round lead after the second round of the PGA Tour Champions' Mitsubishi Electric Classic.

Ironically, Donald is tied for the lead because he chipped in for birdie on the 18th hole Friday to close out his 4-under 67.

2016 Masters champion Danny Willett was the first defending champion to miss the cut since Mike Weir in 2004.

Miguel Angel Jimenez and fellow Spanish star Jose Maria Olazabal also shot 69. The Italian fired in eight birdies and made just one bogey to jump 38 places.

The last time Donald held a lead after 36 rounds was at the 2011 RBC Heritage, where he fell in a playoff against Brandt Snedeker.

Lasse Jensen (70), Paul Waring (69) and Pablo Larrazabal (69) were tied for third on 5 under, a shot behind Paratore and three off the lead.
