By adding esports competitions to the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, the winners will receive medals in an official Olympic event, bringing team and solo-based video gaming competition one step closer to widespread official Olympic sports representation in the years ahead.

Alongside Fifa 2017, gamers at AIMAG can expect to compete in MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) and RTA (real time attack) games. It will also be a demonstration sport at the 2018 Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia. The only question left now is the kind of games the OCA plans in bringing to the 2022 Asian games. For the AIMAG, which will be held from September 17 to 27, a series of online qualification rounds across the three e-sports will be held in two parts: first at a national level followed by region-specific.

"The OCA has always been committed to the inheritance, development, and improvement of Asian sports", OCA president Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah said in a statement. "Various studies have shown that video gaming attracts a lot of viewers and it has the potential to lure sponsors, considering the primary target audience is the youth", the official said.

Alisports, which was established in 2015 as the Alibaba Sports Group by the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, intends to work closely with the OCA to develop the marketing of e-sports.

Sun said it was much easier for Alibaba to tap into the emerging e-sports sector and build up its e-sports tournaments compared with traditional sports, which had been developed over many years.

In July of past year, Alibaba announced a partnership with the global e-Sports Federation (IeSF).

Major businesses across the world, including BT Sports and EA Games, have been making partnerships and upping prize pots in order to raise the profile of eSports.

A massive industry that continues growing, participants and followers of the E-sport scene and videogame culture have always been hoping that the competition would finally be considered as an actual sport at the Olympics. This year, the revenue is estimated to rise to $696 million, with China contributing 15 percent of it.
