Tillerson, Lavrov fail to bridge deepening US-Russia divide

The meetings come on the heels of a US missile strike on an air base in Syria in retaliation for a chemical weapon attack on civilians that's been blamed on the Bashar al-Assad regime.

Lavrov didn't limit his criticism of the U.S.to the cruise-missile strike on the Syrian airfield: He knocked the entire foreign-policy message coming out of Washington, D.C., saying Russian Federation has "a lot of questions regarding the very ambiguous and contradictory ideas on a whole range of bilateral and worldwide issues".

As the Federal Bureau of Investigation and multiple congressional committees investigate possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign, the president and his aides can now point to his hard-line stance on Syrian President Bashar Assad as evidence he's willing to stand up to Putin.

"Right now we're not getting along with Russian Federation at all", said a blunt President Donald Trump as tensions between the two nuclear powers continue to worsen.

Trump said it was "certainly possible" that Putin knew about the attack, blamed on Assad, indicating Russian officials were present at the source airbase, which Trump later bombed.

The Moscow news conference came after Mr Putin met Mr Tillerson for the first time since Mr Trump took office.

'We have seen very alarming actions recently with an unlawful attack against Syria, ' Lavrov said.

Haley said the U.S.is ready to do its part to bring about peace but was "looking for partners" who were ready to act.

IS uses chemical weapons against Iraqi forces in Mosul
At least six Iraqi soldiers have suffered inhalation problems following a chemical attack launched by Islamic State on Sunday. Iraqi officials have said IS periodically uses chemical weapons but that the effect on military operations has been minimal.

Tuesday, the White House declassified a US intelligence report that accused Putin of a cover-up to "confuse" and "obfuscate" on behalf of Assad. "These agreements stipulated Russian Federation as the guarantor of a Syria free of chemical weapons, that they would also locate, secure, and destroy all such armaments in Syria".

The White House has accused Moscow of trying to cover up Assad's use of chemical weapons after the attack on a rebel-held Syrian town last week killed 87 people. A USA defense official says intelligence shows a Russian drone flew over the hospital in Idlib that was treating victims of the chemical attack, prior to the site being later bombed by an unknown aircraft. The Russians operate drones in the area routinely so the Pentagon can not be certain the drone operator even knew what was happening, but the drone was a Russian asset.

Russian Federation again cast a veto at the United Nations Security Council to shield the Assad regime, blocking a Western bid on Wednesday to condemn a deadly gas attack in Syria and push the regime to cooperate with investigators. Perhaps eager to take a shot at the previous USA administration, with whom Putin's government clashed badly, Lavrov said the new group would address "irritants which have dogged our relations over the last couple of years, particularly under the administration of President Obama".

Peskov also said Putin had given Tillerson his views on the situation in Syria, and how it was likely to develop.

The Kremlin called the USA strike an "act of aggression" against a sovereign state carried out in violation of worldwide law under a "far-fetched pretext".

"The current state of US-Russia relations at low point -there is a low state of trust between our two countries".

But Mr Tillerson repeated the administration's new belief that "the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end". "But at least we agreed to establish a dialogue on a number of important issues, including problems created by the previous administration".
