Some of those who knew Stephens said he "got along with everybody", while others said he had a gambling problem.
Authorities are telling people in Cleveland, as well as Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana and MI, to be on the lookout for the suspect, 37-year-old Steve Stephens. He is considered armed and unsafe.
"We called him the junk man", she told the Associated Press.
Authorities posted a US$50,000 reward for Stephens' capture.
"He could be nearby".
Police in Philadelphia say they have "no indication" that the suspect in an apparently random killing in Cleveland is in Philadelphia. They spoke briefly but her phone died, Green said.
"To the young man who murdered my daddy, I ask that you please surrender".
Maggie Green, the mother of Stephens, told CNN that he visited her Saturday afternoon, before the shocking act of violence.
Steve Stephens is being charged, according to various reports, with the murder of 75-year-old Robert Godwin Sr.
Debbie Godwin says her father was retired and had 10 children.
The police chief said investigators did not know whether Stephens was still in the Cleveland area, but noted that there was no evidence the suspect had left Ohio.

Facebook is reviewing its "reporting flows" after a man posted a series of videos including one that showed him shooting and killing an elderly man to the social network on Sunday.
Robert Godwin said he wants to see the suspect caught, because he fears he could kill again.
Police Chief Calvin Williams warned residents to be careful as the go about their day.
Williams said authorities have yet to determine a motive for the shooting. It was a horrific crime - one that has no place on Facebook, and goes against our policies and everything we stand for.
Police said they have been talking with family and friends of Stephens, who is a case manager at Beech Brook, a behavioral health agency headquartered in Pepper Pike, near Cleveland. He has many traffic violations but no criminal record, Williams said.
"We just hope Mr. Stephens is apprehended as quickly as possible so that no one else is injured", she said.
"This individual is armed and unsafe and, quite frankly, at this point he could be a lot of places", he said. "We know it is not her fault. Now I'm wondering how I'm going to do it without him", she cried.
Stephens is wanted for aggravated murder in the shooting death of Godwin, which happened at 695 East 93rd Street.
At first the search was expanded only to include the surrounding states of Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, and Indiana.
