Trump has projected a transactional attitude toward China, saying in interviews and remarks that he planned to use trade as a negotiating tool for Xi's cooperation on North Korea.

"But the era of strategic patience is over", Pence declared.

On Friday, US media said that Trump may order a strike against North Korea in case Pyongyang decides to carry out another nuclear weapon test.

Trump wrote Sunday on Twitter that China was working with the United States on "the North Korea problem".

The United States, its allies and China are working together on a range of responses to North Korea's latest failed ballistic missile test, U.S. President Donald Trump's national security adviser said on Sunday, citing what he called an global consensus to act.

Raddatz asked McMaster if "the military option's still on the table?" "And so we're working together with our allies and partners, and with the Chinese leadership, to develop a range of options", McMaster told ABC's "This Week". British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson earlier urged North Korea to abide by United Nations resolutions and stop its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Mr. Trump does "not want to telegraph in any way how we'll respond to certain incidents, it's clear that the president is determined not to allow this kind of capability to threaten the United States".

He said the US and its allies would deal with the situation "through peaceable means or ultimately by whatever means are necessary".

One unnamed USA official said it was unlikely to have been an intercontinental (ICBM) missile, but investigations were continuing.

The officials weren't authorized to speak publicly on the results of the policy review and requested anonymity.

Residents urged to be on alert for Facebook murder suspect
The suspect in question allegedly posted a video of the homicide on Facebook and claimed to have committed multiple other murders. Authorities in Cleveland said they will be working with federal, county, state and other local partners to help track Stephens.

"But don't get too excited by that, they've also had quite a lot of successful tests", he said.

CNN's Will Ripley in Pyongyang, North Korea, reported there was no immediate confirmation from North Korean state media about the launch. "But dialogue for the sake of having dialogue is meaningless".

James Mattis, the USA defence chief, said in a statement on Sunday: "The president and his military team are aware of North Korea's most recent unsuccessful missile launch". He urged China and Russian Federation to play more constructive roles on the issue.

This is Pence's first visit to South Korea - part of an Asia tour that also includes stops in Japan, Indonesia and Australia.

A South Korean defense official said the action took place in Sinpo, a port city in eastern North Korea.

The world woke up on Easter Sunday morning to the news that a missile had failed at launch from North Korea's Sinpo naval base at 6.20am local time.

North Korea displayed almost 60 missiles, including what is suspected to be a new intercontinental ballistic missile, at a parade in the capital.

US Pacific Command said it tracked a missile launch at 5:21 p.m. ET and said the missile blew up nearly immediately.

Trump added in a later tweet, "Our military is building and is rapidly
becoming stronger than ever before".
