North Korea test launch fails just after regime shows off new missiles

"But don't get too excited by that, they've also had quite a lot of successful tests", he said.

CNN's Will Ripley in Pyongyang, North Korea, reported there was no immediate confirmation from North Korean state media about the launch. "But dialogue for the sake of having dialogue is meaningless".

James Mattis, the USA defence chief, said in a statement on Sunday: "The president and his military team are aware of North Korea's most recent unsuccessful missile launch". He urged China and Russian Federation to play more constructive roles on the issue.

This is Pence's first visit to South Korea - part of an Asia tour that also includes stops in Japan, Indonesia and Australia.

A South Korean defense official said the action took place in Sinpo, a port city in eastern North Korea.

The world woke up on Easter Sunday morning to the news that a missile had failed at launch from North Korea's Sinpo naval base at 6.20am local time.

North Korea displayed almost 60 missiles, including what is suspected to be a new intercontinental ballistic missile, at a parade in the capital.

US Pacific Command said it tracked a missile launch at 5:21 p.m. ET and said the missile blew up nearly immediately.

Trump added in a later tweet, "Our military is building and is rapidly
becoming stronger than ever before".
