Nearly 600 people were at the nightclub on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) said it had taken at least nine patients to hospital, while police said a further two people with similar injuries sought treatment at a hospital.

A journalist who was in the area at the time, Phie McKenzie, tweeted: "Scary scenes in Hackney tonight, we have heard reports of chemical burns of people in the building here".

"Twelve people showing signs and symptoms attributed to corrosive substances were treated on scene by ambulance and brigade personnel prior to removal to hospital", he added.
