In what constituted a big blow to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday (April 17) filed an FIR against 13 leaders of the ruling party of West Bengal in connection with the Narada sting operation of previous year. The Opposition had predicted a loss for the ruling TMC but Banerjee single-handedly guided her party to a massive victory in the elections and the party claimed that the sting was a conspiration to defeat it.

According to CBI sources, a Special Investigation Team will be set up to investigate the case.

The FIRs have been lodged against Trinamool ministers, MPs and they have been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act and for conspiracy too.

The TMC leaders booked by the CBI are Rajya Sabha MP Mukul Roy, Lok Sabha MPs Saugata Roy, Aparupa Poddar, Sultan Ahmed, Prasun Banerjee and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, CBI sources said.

Leader of opposition and veteran Congress leader Abdul Mannan demanded resignation of the Trinamool leaders named in the FIR. The court had also ordered disciplinary inquiry against senior IPS officer SMH Mirza within 24 hours in the case.

The preliminary enquiry was registered on directions of a division bench of the Calcutta high court, comprising acting chief justice Nishita Mhatre and justice T. Chakraborti.

The CBI today registered FIR against leaders of Trinamool Congress in Narada sting case.

News website Narada News allegedly caught visuals of top Trinamool leaders taking money from a man who was apparently seeking favours from the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal. The sting videos were shot by Naradanews.com over a period of two years and were aired just a few days prior to the 2016 assembly polls in Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress managed to retain West Bengal by a convincing win but the tapes added to its problems as several leaders named in the case were already facing the CBI probe in the chit fund scam.
