Vikings' owners release statement on passing of Dan Rooney

Rooney took over operation of the team in the 1960s from his father, Art, who founded the franchise.

In his almost eight decades with the Steelers, the team won six Super Bowl titles.

The news has saddened many across the league and anyone associated with the Steelers, past, and present. "Michelle and I offer our condolences to the Rooney family, some of the most gracious and thoughtful people we know - even as we celebrate the life of Dan Rooney: a championship-caliber good man". Dan Rooney was a great president for the Steelers and made all of the players that wore the black and gold of the Steelers feel welcome and appreciated.

The funeral mass will occur the next day, at 11:00 a.m. ET at St. Paul Cathedral in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.

Rooney played quarterback and halfback at North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and for a while he considered joining the priesthood. Outside of the Steelers, Rooney is the patriarch of the Rooney Rule, which was created in 2003 and requires teams to interview minority candidates for senior positions with the organization.

The Rooney Rule was formed by Mr. Rooney in order to promote diversity in coaching hires. He said Rooney's values were based in "America, Ireland and his church". His daughter Kathleen died in 1987, and his daughter Rita died in 2012.
