The internet was quickly whirling after the Warriors won the title thanks to tweets from a number of people with big Twitter followings, including a New York Daily News columnist who wrote that the team was opting out of the visit.

"Today is all about celebrating our championship", the organization wrote in a statement released Tuesday.

Most players did not discuss their reported decision to shun the chance to meet Trump.

Less than 24 hours after winning the 2017 NBA Finals on Monday night, the Warriors unanimously voted to decline the White House ceremony honoring their Finals win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to several reports, including one by CNBC analyst Josh Brown.

"We respect the office of the presidency of the United States and what it stands for".

Steph Curry celebrated winning the National Basketball Association championship for the second time in three years in some style. The series, the first that matched the same teams in three straight Finals, averaged 20.4 million viewers, Nielsen said Tuesday.

The tradition of sports teams visiting the White House dates to the 1800s. He previously talked about his lack of support for Trump, saying he is the complete opposite of the things they tell young people to be. Stephen Curry and David West have also leveled criticism against the president.

Responding to Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank's comments that month that Trump is an "asset" to the United States, Curry said, "I agree with that description if you remove the 'et'".

Even their coach Steve Kerr has been critical of the new POTUS.

One day after winning their second National Basketball Association championship in three seasons, the Warriors issued a statement saying they are focused on enjoying their title rather than deciding whether or not to attend a White House celebration.

A precedent has been set that outstanding performers in sport will be honoured at the White House.
