Neil McGill Gorsuch of Colorado won Senate confirmation Friday as the 113th justice of the Supreme Court, completing a 419-day odyssey that stretched from the death of Justice Antonin Scalia and the denial of President Obama's nominee to a Senate rules change known as the "nuclear option".

Liberal groups called for an all-out fight to reject Gorsuch, a staunch conservative who is likely to vote "to limit gay rights, uphold restrictions on abortion, and invalidate affirmative action programmes", according to a study that analyses the ideologies of potential Supreme Court nominees. It was a shamefully partisan dereliction of the Senate's constitutional duty to provide advice and consent, and the effects of this cynical power play were magnified when President Donald Trump nominated the far-right-leaning Judge Gorsuch instead of a more moderate and generally acceptable candidate. It will happen in a ceremony in the Rose Garden at the White House at 9 a.m. MT.

The Supreme Court seat was controversial before Trump was even elected, as Democrats have long believed that the seat was "stolen" by Republicans due to the fact that Scalia died during the a year ago of Barack Obama's presidency, which would give him the power to nominate a justice.

Mr Gorsuch will officially be a member of the court once he takes the two oaths. Democrats accused Gorsuch of being so conservative as to be outside the judicial mainstream, favoring corporate interests over ordinary Americans in legal opinions, and displaying insufficient independence from Trump. After assembling the pledges of 41 Senate Democrats to iniate the first partisan filibuster of a Supreme Court nominee, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sought to prevent a vote of the full Senate.

The move changed Senate rules to allow them to break the filibuster with only 51 votes rather than the traditional 60, something senators on both sides of the aisle said could change the chamber's role in the political sphere. "He's an exceptional choice", he said.

The president told reporters on Air Force One on Thursday he hopes for at least one more vacancy during his administration, but said "there could be as many as four".

The vote was 55-45, short of the 60 needed to advance Gorsuch over procedural hurdles to a final vote.

"In fact, under a certain scenario, there could even be more than that", Trump said.
