Delta trying to catch up on days of flight delays

Storms that hit the Southeast earlier this week have continued to wreak havoc on air travel Saturday, with Delta Air Lines canceling nearly 300 more flights at its Atlanta hub.

Eight of those were to Minnesota, said Patrick Hogan, spokesman for the Metropolitan Airports Commission. Tracking service FlightAware said Delta had canceled more than 400 flights by midday.

The trouble started Wednesday as powerful thunderstorms moved across Georgia and other states in the Southeast, grounding many flights.

Delta's Chief Operating Officer Gil West released a statement apologizing for the cancellations.

The baggage claim area at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was backed up Saturday with bags from stranded or rerouted passengers.

He says employees ordered 60 pizzas and 20 trays of chicken biscuits to feed more than 300 customers in Panama City, Florida.

The No. 2 USA airline said it had canceled around 3,000 flights in the wake of Wednesday's storms that left passengers stranded and frustrated during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

Delta Air Lines is trying to get back to normal after "unprecedented" severe weather grounded thousands of flights. That brought the total number of cancellations to around 3,000. Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport has not had any cancelled or delayed flights.

Delta said the storms disrupted pilot and crew rotations and they hope to catch up by Sunday afternoon.

In a note to passengers Saturday, Delta explained that heavy spring break travel meant there were very limited options for rebooking flights.

Delta is offering refunds to passengers whose flights are canceled, and they do not travel. When this happens, unfortunately, further delays and cancellations result'.
