San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan says on Twitter that investigators believe "the suspect is down".

A candlelight vigil was planned for the victims this evening at North Park Elementary.

New information released Tuesday provides a glimpse into the chaos that ensued after an alleged shooter walked into his estranged wife's classroom in San Bernardino and opened fire, and why his case in Kern County was dismissed.

He said at least two students were taken to a hospital.

Police said they do not believe the two children were targeted.

Jonathan died at a hospital after being shot Monday in his classroom by the estranged husband of his teacher, Karen Smith, who also was killed.

She says Smith had the patience and understanding to handle special-needs students.

Smith's mother, Irma Sykes, said that her daughter nearly immediately regretted marrying Anderson, calling him a "wolf in sheep's clothing" whose abusive, angry side came out only after they were married. "She would never put the lives of her students in danger". One 8-year-old boy, Jonathan Martinez, died from his wounds.

Anderson and Smith, both 53, were found dead in the classroom after the incident, which occurred at around 10:30 a.m. local time, Burguan said.

Smith moved out of their home in March and went to live with other family, he said. Smith has been identified by authorities as one of the people shot by Cedric Anderson, identified as her estran.

The gunman posted several photos of him and Ms Smith following their wedding ceremony, including videos of them kissing while hiking in Arizona for their honeymoon and a post calling her an "angel". "She decided she needed to leave him". Some of his other messages quoted Bible verses.

Anderson had been arrested four times since 1982, though none resulted in convictions, Burguan said.

"I thought they were firecrackers but then the police started coming and then I realized it was gunshots", he said.

Another of Anderson's girlfriends was granted a restraining order in 2013 after Anderson held a pillow over her face, the newspaper reported. According to police, Smith had left Anderson, but there were no clues something this drastic would happen.

Marissa said the shooter didn't speak as he began shooting.

He was armed with what was believed to be a.357 revolver, and opened fire "without saying anything" after entering the classroom - which contained 15 students and two teacher aides, Burguan said.

The two students struck by gunfire had been standing behind Smith, the chief said.

Smith shared her love of teaching with Jennifer, who is also a teacher.

Police said they did not find a suicide note in their search of his home Monday in Riverside. It was to remain closed for the remainder of the week.

Friends and relatives said Martinez was full of life and curious to learn as much as he could. According to KTLA, the college campus is just a few blocks away from the elementary where the shooting took place. And they had dated for four years.
