Jeffrey Epstein investigation expands into private island and New Mexico

Jailed American financier Jeffrey Epstein made payments to two potential witnesses seeking to influence them in the child sex trafficking case against him late a year ago, prosecutors said late on Friday.

Those findings will be sent to federal authorities in NY, where Epstein has pleaded "not guilty" to sex trafficking charges.

The prosecutors' filing came as US Labour Secretary Alex Acosta announced that he was resigning amid criticism of his role in the 2008 plea deal. The financier pleaded not guilty to "sexually exploiting and abusing dozens of minor girls" at his mansions in Manhattan and Palm Beach from 2002 to 2005.

They claimed Epstein made two payments, one for $100,000 and another for $250,000, to the two people.

He admitted a single charge of soliciting a minor for prostitution in exchange for a 13 month jail sentence, and registering as a sex offender. The office has not said how many accusers were interviews or elaborated on what they say took place at the property.

Prosecutors in NY said the money was to "influence" the unnamed people, and was paid within the past year.

He is due in court on Monday for a hearing to consider his request for bail.

The indictment filed in NY this week accuses Epstein of paying girls hundreds of dollars in cash for massages and then molesting them at his homes in Palm Beach, Florida, and NY from 2002 through 2005.

He has asked to be allowed to dwell up for trial beneath condominium arrest, however prosecutors argued in the courtroom filing on Friday that he wants to be saved on the attend of bars.
