Aurora police fatally shoot armed resident who killed intruder during home invasion

Investigators learned the man shot by an officer was a resident at the house.

Black apparently shot an intruder in his home, according to information released by Aurora police, then was himself shot by an officer responding to multiple reports of a disturbance in the area.

A Vietnam war veteran defending his home from an intruder was shot and killed by police who mistook the man for the assailant, Colorado authorities said Tuesday.

Chief Metz says the officer involved has been placed on administrative reassignment with pay, per department policy.

The child suffered serious injuries, but they're not considered life-threatening.

'It's sad and screwed up, ' Brad Maestas, who has known the family for 34 years, told the Denver Post. He watched paramedics take away the victim on a gurney.

The APD is investigating the shooting with other law enforcement agencies, including the Denver Police Department, and has so far released few details.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office said the facts of the investigation would be presented to the Office of the District Attorney for a determination of whether criminal charges should be filed against any involved person.

An investigation is ongoing. That man, identified as the resident of the home, later died from his injuries at the hospital.

Metz called the situation "heartbreaking" and "tragic" and that the Aurora Police Department is providing assistance to the family of the resident who was killed by the officer. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time". Since then, the city has been eager to demonstrate the town as a secure place to raise a family.

In 2012, a gunman entered an Aurora movie theater and killed 12 people, perhaps its most notable event.
