The Joker 'Batman' spin-off film in the works produced by Martin Scorsese

The Joker has had, let's say, a mixed movie history.

After the critical disaster that was Suicide Squad hit theaters in 2016, many fans were shocked and annoyed that Batman's archenemy, the Joker, barely appears in the movie at all despite the character being featured heavily in the film's promotional campaign.

Martin Scorsese on board to produce a 1980's Gotham City crime film based on the origins of the Joker? According to Deadline, 'this will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters'.

That actually sounds rather inspired, and while it's hard to picture the guy from The Hangover series tackling something in this vein, having Scorsese aboard lends the project a ton of credibility. This means that Jared Leto, who is signed on to reprise his role as Joker in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff Gotham City Sirens, will not be a part of this film.

Martin Scorsese is in talks to have some sort of role on the film, but it's now unknown what that role would be.

Not much details about the secret movie is known so far, but the movie is set to tell the tale of the Joker's origins.

Deadline reported Tuesday that comedy director Todd Phillips ("Old School", "The Hangover") is co-writing a stand-alone Joker film with Scott Silver ("8 Mile", "The Fighter").

While Marvel has their cinematic universe mapped out until the sun explodes, DC seems to be approaching things in a more haphazard way.

This comes just days after Karen Gillan - who plays blue-skinned alien assassin Nebula in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" - admitted she would love to join DC as a female Joker.

As the movie seems to be set in a different universe, Jared Leto who now plays the role of Joker in the DCEU will not be reprising his role for this spinoff. I'm not exactly singing a unique tune here, but I wasn't insane about what Leto did with the role or his general direction as a character in Suicide Squad so the idea of a new incarnation and the opportunity to see a new actor take on the role is really thrilling.
