Asian stocks fall as North Korea, US tensions escalate

North Korea says it is examining its operational plans for attacking Guam to contain USA bases there.

Later, an unidentified anchorman on the same channel warned the United States that "an all-out war" might strike "the USA mainland".

The KPA spokesman said in a statement it was "carefully examining" a recommendation by Kim Jong-un for "a powerful and effective action plan for containing the US imperialists' aggression hardware".

German and USA sovereign bond prices also rose on the fear trade, sending yields lower despite recent strong readings of economic growth.

Most Asian currencies stumbled, with the Korean won on pace for its biggest fall in almost eight weeks as North Korea warned it is "carefully examining" plans for a missile strike on the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

The consequences of any US strike could be catastrophic for neighboring countries such as South Korea and Japan where thousands of USA military personnel are stationed.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is the Stalinist state's formal name.

According to the Pacific Air Forces website, the bombers are joining their counterparts from South Korea and Japan in sequenced bilateral missions.

A Japanese defense paper and a USA media report Tuesday said North Korea may have successfully produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles. It is about 2,200 miles (3,500 km) southeast of North Korea, much closer than it is to any of the United States.

The closest U.S. territory to this remote island is Hawaii, which is nearly 6,500 kilometers away.

Guam became a United States territory in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Security and defense officials on Guam said on August 9, 2017, that there is no imminent threat to people there or in the Northern Mariana Islands after North Korea said it was examining its operational plans for attack. The Dow snapped a nine-day streak of closing records.
