That meeting now is a subject of congressional and Justice Department investigations into possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election.

The president's dictation of this statement to his son will create significant legal headaches for him and could be used by Robert Mueller, special counsel for the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation, as evidence of his corrupt intent as part of an existing obstruction of justice investigation.
Trump dictated the statement to Hope Hicks, his longtime assistant and head of White House strategic communications. Donald Trump Jr told Fox News' Sean Hannity that he did not tell his father about last year's meeting: "It was such a nothing". No one with such limited knowledge of what actually happened in the meeting could come up with a statement so nuanced and careful.
