The court gave its orders after hearing three petitions on cases challenging certain laws that protect cow vigilante groups in the country.

Don't support any kind of vigilantism, Centre tells SC.

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Indian government to not support violence in the name of protecting cows - an animal considered sacred in the Hindu religion.

It also sought the assistance of the Centre and the states to delete violent content on the social media, related to cow vigilantism.

Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar told a bench of Justices Dipak Misra, A M Khanwilkar and M M Shantanagoudar that the Centre had no role to play in controlling such incidents as law and order was a state subject.

Minneapolis chief resigns after fatal shooting
She said the impact of the shooting, which has drawn worldwide attention, particularly from Australia, has not been lost on her. Some members of the Minneapolis City Council say they'd like to see police Chief Janee (juh-NAY') Harteau (har-TOH') dismissed.

The Gujarat and Jharkhand governments told the court that action had been taken against those involved in vigilante attacks. In April, the Supreme Court had asked Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka to file a report on the rising incidents of cow protectionism.

As four other states, who were made respondents in the matter have not filed their response, the Court adjourned the matter giving them four weeks time to react.

The petition, filed by Congress leader Tehseen Poonawala, alleged that "Gau Rakshak Dals" were spreading violence and committing atrocities against dalits and people from minority communities and pleaded the court to direct the governments to take action against them. Opposition parties and critics say that the BJP-led government at the Centre has done little to rein in the vigilante groups.

There have been a series of mob attacks recently in the name of cow protection, which prompted a tough message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month.
