Israel urged not to release bodies of slain Palestinians

Video from the Temple Mount esplanade showed Israeli security forces taking cover amid a hail of gunfire, and police shooting a man at close range.

The attack happened shortly after 7 a.m. near Lions' Gate in Jerusalem's Old City, according to NPR. They largely identify with the Palestinian cause. It is the holiest site to Jews and the third holiest in Islam.

Israeli police said they had no comment.

Israel said the killers emerged from the Temple Mount compound with automatic weapons, in what Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan called a "defiling" of the holy site.

Israel blames the violence on incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders compounded on social media sites that glorify violence and encourage attacks.

In addition to the developments in Jerusalem, the papers also highlighted the Israeli army killing of a Palestinian in Deheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem during early morning clashes following an army raid of the camp to arrest activists.

The violence had greatly subsided in recent months.

"Any Palestinian who resists with any kind of violence risks having [his] home demolished or sealed and [his] entire extended family expelled onto streets".
