The ecommerce giant said the event grew 60% since a year ago, but didn't provide specific sales figures.

Amazon shares were only 0.37% up in Wednesday premarket trading, and were expected to open at $997.79 after closing on Tuesday at $994.13.

You can usually find some pretty good deals on smartphones on Amazon most of the time, but the deals are even better during Prime Day.

The original Echo model was discounted 50 percent to $89.99 while the smaller Echo Dot was given 30 percent off. As of 4am in New York, Amazon said that "millions" of Prime members had already shopped on the website. US sales alone are pegged at $1.56 billion, up 20% from past year, TheStreet reported.

The exclusive sale for Prime members broke the e-commerce titan's single-day sales record a second year in a row.

To take advantage of the discounts, shoppers had to be Amazon Prime members, which costs $99 a year, or $10.99 a month, and includes perks like free, two-day shipping and access to Prime Video and Prime Music.

This year, Amazon declared July 11 to be Prime Day, but the savings kicked off even earlier for Prime members and were extended to last for 30 hours, up from the typical 24. There were also significant discounts on some of Amazon's private-label grocery and apparel products.

Amazon hasn't disclosed sales figures from Prime Dya, but last week, JP Morgan analysts estimated the holiday would net Amazon $1 billion in revenue, a 55% increase over last year's Prime Day.
