More than half of the Republicans surveyed for a Pew Research Center poll released Monday say colleges and universities are hurting the country, a drastic shift from how the same group viewed such institutions two years ago.
Meanwhile, Democrats are split: Half of those who are, or lean, Democrat believe religious institutions have a positive impact, according to the survey, while 36 percent said they have a negative impact.
The Pew Research Center poll finds 58 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents think colleges and universities hurt the country.
It's the latest survey - locally and nationally - to show that opinions toward higher education and college are increasingly splitting along demographic and political lines.
The findings mark a shift dramatic shift in Republicans' views of higher education, according to Pew. Democrats are largely divided on the media's impact, with 44 percent calling it positive and 46 percent calling it negative.
