Ricciardo claims unexpected Azerbaijan victory

Ricciardo had a poor start but took full advantage of several safety-car stints and the numerous incidents to grab an unexpected win.

Vettel was penalised by the race stewards.

Although Vettel is adamant that he was brake-tested on the exit of Turn 15 as leader Hamilton prepared for the Baku race's second safety-car restart, the FIA's analysis of data from Hamilton's auto showed no proof of that. With another victory on Sunday, Hamilton could overtake Vettel in the championship tally.

Stroll was pipped to second spot on the line by Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas but at 18 years 239 days old he is the youngest driver to make the podium in his first Formula One season.

Not surprisingly, Stroll cringed after his first gulp. The ramifications for them and the title fight of this dramatic and clearly emotional race will run and run. After the initial collision, the German gesticulated angrily with both hands as he pulled alongside his rival and hit the side of Hamilton's auto.

Niki Lauda - the non-executive chairman at Hamilton's Mercedes team and a three-time world champion - described Vettel's actions on lap 19 as "crazy", before agreeing that the apparent moment of madness had tainted the German's reputation. It evaporated in an instance.

"If I get a penalty then we should both get a penalty". "What the f*** is going on?"

Hamilton was then ordered to pit, on safety grounds, and rejoined ninth with his headrest secured.

"The leader dictates the pace", Vettel said.

The decision "delegitimizes the overwhelming majority of Jews on the planet", Jacobs said. In Israel, only a small minority are affiliated with those movements.

Seven of the drivers that started the race in Baku failed to finish after a series of collisions during the race, and debris on the track even saw the red flag waved during lap 22.

As Hamilton returned to the pit lane on lap 22, with the race suspended, he left his cockpit before examining the back of his auto.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his auto during the Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan, Sunday, June 25, 2017.

The race resumed after a 23-minute break with Hamilton once more leading the pack away under Safety Car conditions.

Following the top three drivers came Vettel in fourth and Hamilton fifth, meaning the German extends his championship lead to 14 points.

But luck was not on Hamilton's side when his protective head rest came loose and he was forced to pit.

Hamilton frantically tried to fix the flapping piece of silver bodywork by holding it down with one hand on his vehicle with the other hand on his steering wheel as he travelled at speeds in excess of 220mph. Perez took third on the opening turns, but the Red Bull has been one of the best cars on the grid in straight-line speed.

Shortly before that, Hamilton and Vettel were involved in an incident that threatens to sour their good relations. "Ten seconds stop and go is quite terrible when you stand there and have nothing to do".

Niki Lauda has launched a scathing criticism of Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel for deliberately driving into Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes under the safety vehicle during an ill-tempered Azerbaijan Grand Prix. "There's a long, long way to go and it's Hammer-time, that's for sure".
