CROMWELL Jordan Spieth became the third wire-to-wire victor in the 65-year history of the Travelers Championship on Sunday, but it was accomplished with probably the greatest shot in the history of the tournament.
CROMWELL, Conn. - Rory McIlroy used his third different putter in three days during the Travelers Championship on Sunday.
Spieth had salvaged a par from the bunker at the 18th to force a play-off against Daniel Berger on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Spieth completed 54 holes at 12-under 198.
Boo Weekley worked his way up the leaderboard after shooting a 65 to finish at 11 under. The 43-year-old Weekley, playing just in front of Spieth, birdied five of the last eight holes.
Deadlocked with Berger at 11-under down the final holes of the round, Spieth sank a 16-foot birdie putt at the par-4 15th hole to reclaim a one-stroke edge.
Rory McIlroy didn't get the start he wanted in the first three rounds of the Travelers Championship, but he finished well enough to want to come back again.
"That was one for the ages", said Spieth, also the victor at Pebble Beach in February.
Bill Cosby jury quits for the night, no verdict
Prosecutors rejected filing a case against Cosby based on Goins' allegations, which they said investigators could not corroborate. Constand has denied Cosby's explanation , [ultimately] telling police, "We were not involved in any romantic relationship".
However his final-day 70 and a three-under 67 from Berger allowed the Florida-based golfer to match Spieth on 12 under.
"It was nice to see as many of those putts as possible go in to give me some confidence for the weekend", Spieth said.
The crowd has been squarely behind Spieth, who was greeted with a large contingent as he walked to the first tee just before 1 p.m. Saturday Spieth began at 1:05 and was followed by a lively gallery throughout his round.
At 23 years, 10 months, he is the second-youngest since World War II to win 10 times on the PGA Tour (Tiger Woods - 23 years, 6 months). And after two off-target shots on the first playoff hole, Spieth found himself in the bunker on the par-4 18th. He shot a 73 to finish at even par.
One stroke behind them was former joint leader Joakim Lagergren (69), who had four birdies after a bogey on the second hole.
Berger, the Memphis victor two weeks ago before missing the cut last week at the U.S. Open, just missed a 50-foot putt from off the 18th green left that would have forced a second playoff hole.
Despite giving up the outright lead with the pair of miscues, however, Spieth showed the same tenacity he has all week and immediately clawed both strokes back with birdies at 15 and 16.
"It was windy out there, switching a little bit, not only trying to figure out where the wind coming from but how hard it was blowing made it a little more difficult than yesterday".
