US President Donald Trump has suggested he was just trying to keep fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey honest with his cryptic tweet implying there might be recordings of their private conversations.
Forty-five percent of respondents say they are more likely to believe Comey's version of events from his June 8 testimony to the U.S. Senate, versus 22 percent who are more likely to believe what Trump has said, NBC News reported.
"When he found out that there may be tapes out there..." You'll have to take a look at that because and he has to tell what actually took place at the events and my story didn't change.
Mr Trump showed concern about that situation as well, telling Fox that Mr Mueller is "very, very good friends with Comey which is bothersome". "I can tell you that he did admit that what I said was right", Trump said, referring to Comey's initial refusal during his tenure to say the president himself wasn't under investigation in the FBI's probe. In early May, Trump tweeted the emptiest of threats at Comey when he raised the specter of "tapes" documenting their private interactions.
His motivation, Comey acknowledged, was that leaking the memos "might prompt the appointment of a special counsel". Lawyers with experience in similar cases say his behavior may be important to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, which is now exploring the possibility Trump sought to obstruct justice.
"While I would certainly hope that the President's most recent statement is true, we will continue to pursue the matter with other witnesses so that the public can be assured that if recordings were ever made, they will be preserved and be made available to the committee and ultimately to the public, as well", he said in a statement.
Sanchez blanks Arsenal talk as Chile, Germany set for semis
Whoever wins will be in pole position to qualify first heading into the final Group B fixture ahead of the semi-finals. There is no doubt that this competition means more to Chile than it does to Germany , or perhaps any other side here.
Trump disputed Comey's testimony that he felt pressured by the president to drop the FBI's investigation of fired national security adviser Mike Flynn, as well as Comey's account that the president asked for loyalty from him.
Trump responded at that time, via Twitter, that Comey "better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"
Trump fired Comey in May after he refused to end the FBI investigation into whether Russia meddled in the 2016 election and whether Trump's campaign colluded with the Russian government to influence the results.
Thursday's revelation came a day ahead of a deadline to turn over any tapes to the House intelligence committee.
Trump expressed optimism that the Senate would pass the Republican health-care bill revealed Thursday, saying the four GOP senators who stated their opposition were "friends" of his and would "probably get there".
