He has undergone several surgeries and remains hospitalized.
The latest update from the hospital, released on Wednesday, said Scalise "continues to make good progress" and was beginning "an extended period of healing and rehabilitation".
U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed Hodgkinson, who was later identified as an unemployed home inspector who held a hostile attitude toward President Donald Trump and other Republicans. Those deputies found Hodgkinson in possession of his weapon legally, asked him to keep the noise down and left. Hodgkinson had visited the unit 43 times between April and June.
The FBI said that despite Hodgkinson's antipathy for Trump and the Republicans, so far the attack appeared more "spontaneous" than premeditated - though the investigation is still in its early stages, and officials said they have not finished examining all of his electronic devices. When the witness responded that it was a Republican event Hodgkinson, acting alone, shot in the vicinity of the field where Members of Congress and staffers were standing.
The others injured in the shooting were two Capitol Police officers, Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner; Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods; and Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent for Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas. Hodgkinson was a licensed firearms owner so no charges were filed in that incident.
A female police officer with less than 2 years' experience withstood a barrage of gunfire from the gunman.
Slater can't explain how Hodgkinson knew Republicans were practicing for the congressional baseball game where he had been sleeping in his auto.
