Government health insurance markets holding up -- barely

As I've traveled across Minnesota in recent months, Minnesotans have made it clear to me just how important health care is to them, their families and their communities.

But, Governor Brian Sandoval vetoed the bill last week. If this bill passes, millionaires would receive an average tax break of more than $50,000 apiece each year and the 400 highest-income taxpayers, with annual incomes above $300 million, will do even better, with an average annual tax break of $7 million each annually. There's good reason to believe that we might not have to wait that long to see another, similar propose pop-up somewhere else.

Beginning in 2020, it would limit the federal funds Florida and other states get for Medicaid, a program whose expansion was a key part of the Affordable Care Act.

The lack of specificity in Sprinkle's bill meant there were widespread fears of unintended consequences. But Medica anticipates hiking rates more than 43 percent.

Health insurers had until Wednesday to declare whether they planned to sell coverage next year on the exchanges in most states. The average rate increase requested by the companies is 17.8 percent.

"The net result could mean greater wait times and less provider availability for all Nevadans, whether they are on Medicaid, Medicare or commercial insurance" Sandoval wrote.

The legislation would also have a negative impact on informal caregivers, who help provide care for family members at home. Those projections can be wrong, but signing the bill without knowing those details would have been foolish.

"This year's discussion began with a focus on the ACA's individual insurance market, but current healthcare proposals go further and do not enact meaningful, needed repairs to the ACA", the letter says.
