Tower fire began in fridge, cladding was unsafe

Tests so far have found that at least three high-rise apartment buildings in the United Kingdom have flammable external panels like the ones believed to have contributed to a fire that killed 79 people in London, Britain's government said Thursday.

Britain ordered an immediate technical examination of the Hotpoint fridge model to establish whether further action should be taken, but said there was no need for owners to switch off their appliances.

Speculation has focused on the role that cladding apparently used in a recent refurbishment of the tower may have played in the fire, which appeared to spread quickly up the exterior of the tower in the early hours of June 14.

As police continued to unpick the roots of the disaster, Ms McCormack said a string of criminal offences were now being considered.

Scotland Yard said on Friday that the fire started in a faulty fridge and that insulation and tiles on the block failed safety tests.

She also repeated calls for any members of the public with information about people who may have been in the tower at the time of the blaze to contact the police.

The issue has been festering for a quite a while now, with the origins being traced back as far as the Test series with Australia. In the absence of a coach, MV Sridhar, GM - Cricket Operations of BCCI , will supervise the team management on the tour.

"The numbers we have of presumed dead, confirmed dead or missing still remains at 79", McCormack said.

Police will consider manslaughter charges as part of the investigation into the Grenfell Tower blaze, which left at least 79 people dead.

Nicholls noted that after the Lacrosse apartment building in Melbourne's Docklands caught fire in 2014, ICPS had suggested that cladding be tested because of the risk non-conforming cladding poses.

"We now have expert evidence that the fire was not started deliberately", McCormack told reporters in London.

Scotland Yard has launched a manslaughter inquiry after it emerged that the outside cladding and insulation on Grenfell Tower failed safety tests.

"Preliminary tests on the insulation samples collected from Grenfell Tower showed that they combusted soon after the test started". The cladding is being studied amid fears that the panels fueled the fire in the 24-story building that was engulfed in less than an hour.

The affected buildings, housing potentially thousands of residents, are in eight local authority areas, including Manchester, Plymouth and Camden in north London, Communities and Local Government Secretary Sajid Javid said in a letter to lawmakers.
