Mob lynches policeman outside mosque in Srinagar

It may be recalled that Pandith was killed last night outside the mosque, allegedly by a mob of more than 200 people.

The slain police officer was reportedly providing security to the separatist leader. Pandith's body was taken to police control room for identification and other legal procedures.

Singh said that the officer "was one of the very decent and dedicated ones loved and respected by his friends and colleagues".

It is yet to be clear that how things unfolded outside the Jamia Masjid, which led to Ayub Pandith's death. "Such heinous elements are the enemies of Kashmiriyat and humanity and should be given the sternest possible sentence as per the law of the land", he said in a statement. Three people were injured in the firing.

Meanwhile, security has been stepped up in parts of Kashmir Valley after the Hurriyat called for post-Friday prayer protests today against the killing of a civilian near the site of an encounter in south Kashmir's Kakpora village yesterday.

The incident has been widely condemned in Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.

The state's Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti praised the police force for their "restraint" in the face of recent pressures, adding, "the day they run out of patience it will be a hard situation".

The incident was sparked outside a mosque in Nowhatta area when a group of people were coming out of the mosque.

Security reinforcements have been rushed to the area. Ayub was killed by the mob while he was performing his duties. Curfew has been imposed in the area instantly.

The incident came a week after suspected rebels in Indian-held Kashmir ambushed a police patrol, killing five officers. Mob violence and public lynching is outside the parameters of our values and religion. Jammu Kashmir DGP SP Vaid said that the officer was checking the access control in the area following a congregation.

The incident has increased aggression among the residents as they clashed with police since the authorities have restricted their movement due to a fear of protest.

The police sources said that seventeen police officers and men have laid down their lives while discharging duty across Jammu and Kashmir, so far, this year.

He tweeted "The brutal lynching of DySP Md Ayub Pandith marks a new low".
