Of these, 17.2 million come under the responsibility of UNHCR, and the remainder are Palestinian refugees registered with our sister-organization UNRWA. In just one year the population of refugees in Uganda has more than doubled from 500,000 to more than 1.25 million, making Uganda now host to the fastest growing refugee emergency in the world.
With a record 65.6 million people previous year forcibly uprooted from their homes by violence and persecution, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on June 20 called on the global community to provide support and solidarity. He travelled to the country's second-largest camp for internally displaced people, in the town of Bentiu. As of the end of 2016 the number of people seeking asylum globally was 2.8 million.
Among the refugees, asylum seekers - people who have fled their country and are seeking worldwide protection - totaled 2.8 million by the end of 2016.

Among the report's key findings, is that new displacement in particular remains very high. This equates to one person becoming displaced every 3 seconds.

Some 189,300 refugees were accepted for resettlement by 37 countries. Twelve million people in the country were forced to abandon their homes in 2016 - that's more than half of the country's population. That was more than any other country - even more than the 200,000 people estimated to have fled Syria.

Tragically, 75,000 asylum claims were received from children travelling alone or separated from their parents, among them youngsters like Tareq, 16, who dodged armed combatants to walk out of Syria into neighbouring Turkey.
"If we fail, we will be faced with a more unstable world, where the alarming high displacement figures will only continue to increase", said Egeland. It has since exceeded 3 million.
The report attributed that slight reduction in part to people who had returned to their homes, offsetting the number of new people who had fled.
The UNHCR is urging action from the worldwide community, not just to help the agency resettle and protect displaced people, but to also address the root causes of the refugee crisis.
Since 2012 the government has closed refugee application centres in Cape Town‚ Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg.
