A cause of death hasn't been determined for a 22-year-old college student who was detained for almost a year and a half in North Korea before being sent home in a coma, an OH coroner's office said Tuesday.

The service was held at the 22-year-old's school in OH, before his burial at a nearby cemetery.

Warmbier's death has only heightened U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump blamed the "brutality of the North Korean regime" for Warmbier's death.

President Trump piled on this week, saying that "the results would have been different" had Warmbier been brought home sooner.

A public memorial will be held on Thursday morning at Wyoming High School, in the Cincinnati suburb of Wyoming.

Portman said sanctions against North Korea should be tightened, WVXU reports.

Speaking early Thursday to assembled reporters across the street from Wyoming High School, US Senator Rob Portman of OH highlighted the community support that the Warmbier family has received during the tragedy.

Warmbier's funeral is Thursday in Cincinnati, and Portman plans to attend.

"This college kid never should have been detained in the first place", said Mr Portman, who previously revealed he met secretly with North Korean officials in NY last December to press for Mr Warmbier's release.

Warmbier's treatment was "appalling", U.S. Senator Rob Portman of OH told reporters outside the memorial.

North Korea reportedly told a US official that Otto contracted botulism and slipped intothe coma after taking a sleeping pill. Warmbier's parents said their son appeared anguished when he arrived home but died "at peace".

"He never should have been detained in the first place", he said.

"No conclusions about the cause and manner of Mr. Warmbier's death have been drawn at this time", the medical examiner's office said, according to NBC News.

A post-mortem examination was not carried out at the request of the family.

Mr Warmbier was travelling in North Korea with a tour group when he was arrested at Pyongyang airport.

Warmbier had tearfully confessed he tried to steal a propaganda banner and had been convicted of subversion.

"We clicked instantly and the whirlwind of our growing relationship just took off from there", she said.

The family spokesman, Mickey Bergman, told The Times of Israel that the family chose not to disclose Warmbier's Judaism as negotiations went forward so as not to embarrass North Korea, which had announced that Warmbier stole the poster on orders from the Friendship United Methodist Church in Wyoming, Ohio.
