The bill includes new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program and other activities not related to the worldwide nuclear agreement reached with the United States and other world powers.

The amendment, which includes new sanctions on the Kremlin over human rights violations and meddling in the 2016 presidential election, is attached to an Iran sanctions bill that could pass as soon as this week, making it more hard for President Trump to veto the legislation.

Crossing what's become a large partisan divide in Washington, the sanctions passed 97-2 as part of a bill that has also taken aim at Iran, a strong ally of Russia's. The legislation was worked out by Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio; Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee. The sanctions targeted Russian energy products as well as "mining, metals, shipping and railways and".

If the legislation passes the House, it would head to Trump for signing. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is conducting a separate probe.

"This amendment is also an important step as we continue its efforts to reassert congressional authority", Corker said.

The sanctions, which would make it impossible for Trump to act alone to lift economic penalties imposed by President Barack Obama after Russia's annexation of Crimea, were approved late Monday by Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "I am strongly supportive of the sanctions on Russian Federation included in this bill", Sanders said in a statement. In early January, before Trump was sworn in, a bipartisan group of senators introduced a bill created to go beyond the punishments already levied against Russian Federation by the Obama administration and to demonstrate to Trump that forcefully responding to Moscow's election interference wasn't a partisan issue.

Paul said he didn't see the point of "tweaking their nose", referring to Russian Federation and said improving US security should be a priority.

The new Russian Federation sanctions would create a congressional review process if the executive branch eases current sanctions.

The legislation was filed as an amendment to an Iran sanctions bill.

Today's vote was the most significant blow the Republican President has received from the Republican Congress.

The legislation would also restrict the White House from easing sanctions in the future without congressional approval.
