Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

"The congressman's status remains critical", Dr. Sava.

"I feel a lot more optimistic than I do two or three days ago", Sava said.

On Thursday night Scalise was honored at the annual congressional baseball game at Nationals Stadium, where a record crowd showed up. The bullet fractured several bones and injured internal organs, causing severe internal bleeding.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

"He will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries", Sava said.

More on this as it develops.

"The president says that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

"I visited Steve, his wife, and his family in the hospital as he continues to fight for his recovery".

Kepler Telescope Finds 10 Earth-like Habitable Planets
The planet has temperature similar to Earth, is only 12 percent larger than our planet and receives about 40 percent more light. The Kepler Telescope has made some incredible discoveries since it was launched in 2009, but here are the top five findings.

A day after firing on an active shooter to protect Congressmen under attack at a morning baseball practice in Virginia, Capitol Police officer David Bailey returned to the diamond for the annual charity game.

"The thing about it is the game has always been so raw, so partisan, but in good nature though", Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, said earlier on Thursday.

Doctors say Scalise came to the hospital at "imminent risk of death", but Sava now says "an excellent recovery is a good possibility". They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally.

He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., recounted candidate Trump's comments prodding supporters to pummel demonstrators at rallies and said Republicans were being "sanctimonious".

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Mrs. Scalise said in the statement. He declined to describe specific internal injuries. "It was never off my mind when I ran out there ... the reason I was going to second base was Steve Scalise, my colleague, was fighting for his life in the hospital right now".

From the stands, Vince Wetzel, a resident of Sacramento, California, who is visiting Washington and chose to take in the game, said, "It's just a good call to put aside political differences and just play some baseball".
