In another first, Iran - another close Assad ally - fired ballistic missiles at IS targets in eastern Syria, in the province of Deir el-Zour, later on Sunday.

Iran was aiming at terrorists in the ISIS-held Syrian town of Deir ez-Zor after the terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks on the Iranian parliament and at the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini that killed 18 people, mostly civilians.

Iran backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his fight against anti-government rebel groups and ISIS, which is primarily based in the Syrian city of Raqqa.

"In the operation, code-named Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Destiny), the Guards launched six medium-range ballistic missiles at various targets in ranges between 650km to 700km", Tasnim news agency quoted IRGC spokesman Ramazan Sharif as saying on Monday.

As well as punishing "terrorists", it was meant to show that Iran is capable of projecting military power across the region, officials and experts said.

In the preceding years, Trump insisted, over and over again, that he saw greater us intervention in Syria as a awful mistake.

The repeated incidents in the vicinity of the Tanf camp, where US forces train and advise local ground forces in the fight against IS, add to soaring regional tensions that could spiral out of control just as the fight against the extremists enters a crucial phase, with USA -backed forces pushing into the group's de facto capital, the Syrian city of Raqqa.

President Donald Trump has ordered stepped-up military operations against Islamic State and delegated more authority to his generals, but without a comprehensive Syria strategy, his approach risks further confrontation with Syria, Iran and even Russian Federation, according to USA officials and analysts.

"The liberation of Mosul is the symbol of the end of terrorism and a victory for Iran, Iraq, Syria and all the countries of the region that are fighting against terrorism", Rouhani said during talks with Abadi.

The president also pointed to an anti-Iran sanctions bill passed by the USA senate last week, saying the new officials in Washington have made wrong calculations if they think they could pressure Iran with congressional measures. His meeting with Iran's leaders came one day after a visit to Saudi Arabia, Iran's regional rival, in what he said was a tour aimed at promoting reconciliation between the region's Sunnis and Shi'a.

Australia has suspended its airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria as a precaution after a USA fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane earlier this week.

Tehran has retaliated to the twin attacks claimed by the Islamic State earlier this month targeting their positions in Syria with missile strikes.

Activists in Syria said they had no immediate information on damage or casualties from the strikes, launched from Iran's Kurdistan and Kermanshah provinces.

Iran has described the Tehran attackers as being "long affiliated with the Wahhabi", an ultraconservative form of Sunni Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia.

It also raised questions about how U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which had previously put Iran "on notice" for its ballistic missile tests, will respond. Israel also remains concerned about Iran's missile launches. "I have one message for Iran: Don't threaten Israel" he warned.

"Daesh is retreating from Iraq and that is thanks to the government's trust in these young devoted forces", Khamenei said.

The Russian defense ministry said in a statement on Monday that it was suspending the deal after the US military confirmed that it downed a Syrian Air Force fighter jet on Sunday after it dropped bombs near USA partner forces.
