President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Warmbier's death after his lengthy detention in North Korea was a "total disgrace" and that if the college student had been returned home to the USA earlier, "I think the result would have been a lot different". The Trump administration is considering banning travel by US citizens to North Korea, officials said Tuesday, and Trump said Warmbier's treatment was a "total disgrace".
"Unfortunately, the very bad torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today", the family said in a statement after Mr Warmbier's death.
He was medically evacuated in a coma last week, and his death further strained relations between Pyongyang and Washington, with US President Donald Trump calling it a "total disgrace".
He said that while "we can not know for sure that North Korea killed Mr Warmbier".
Kim had been living in North Korea with his wife, who is reportedly still in the country, the Times reported. He died less than a week after returning from North Korea.
On Monday, the 22-year-old Warmbier died in a Cincinnati hospital, days after his medical evacuation home, the victim of his treatment at the hands of North Korea.

In March 2016 Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor prison after taking a propaganda poster with the image of the late Kim Jong-Il, the father of current leader Kim Jong-Un.
His parents told The Associated Press in a statement the day of his release that they wanted "the world to know how we and our son have been brutalized and terrorized by the pariah regime " and expressed relief he had been returned to "finally be with people who love him". It remains unclear what caused the University of Virginia student's severe health problems when he was in North Korea. He traveled to China during a break in his studies, and then onto North Korea with a tourist group.
The cause behind Otto Warmbier's death is expected to remain a mystery as his family has objected to an autopsy.

Donald Trump has thanked China for its role in trying to deal with North Korea's nuclear programme.

The U.S. government accuses North Korea of using such detainees as political pawns. He was leaving North Korea on January 2, 2016, when he was detained at the airport.
