At an awards presentation ceremony held in Germany yesterday, the 670hp 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 - used in the existing 488 GTB and Spider models - was once again hailed for its thunderous usable power and underscores the significance of downsized turbo motors. The twin-turbo V8 fended off close competition from Porsche's 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo powering the 911 Carrera.
The 3.9-liter was actually the recipient of multiple awards, taking not only the overall award, but also winning the 3.0-liter to 4.0-liter category and the performance engine category.
A panel of 58 judges again praised the engine's combination of performance, fuel-efficiency and technology.
The Ferrari engine produces 661bhp at a howling 8,000rpm, and 560lb ft of torque from 3,000rpm.
Finally, the New Engine of the Year gong was picked up by Honda, making a "triumphant return" to the awards. The 567hp, 3,493cc, all-aluminium unit powers the 2017 NSX sportscar. Yet it was Tesla that won the day, scooping both titles for the its full-electric powertrain, as found in the Model S and Model X, both widely regarded as the benchmark vehicles in the EV sector.

As temperatures increase, more people turn on air conditioners, which use a lot of electricity and can strain the power system. San Diego County Animal Services says it has received around 30 rattlesnake calls in the past week as the weather has warmed.
"The baby Ford EcoBoost engine is still the best 1.0-litre, three-cylinder design around, despite newer powertrains arriving on the scene", said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the 19th International Engine of the Year awards.
Ferrari has retained the International Engine of the Year title for the second year in a row.
Porsche's 2-litre flat-four found in the 718 Boxster and Cayman may not have impressed us with its character when we reviewed the vehicle, but in isolation the judges found it well deserving of the 1.8-litre to 2-litre award.
In total, there are 13 categories in the awards, with the latest addition being the Electric Powertrain category.
In the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category, Audi's 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo powering the RS 3 and TT RS remained dominant.
