English FA ends sponsorship deals with betting companies

In response to the FA's decision to end its commercial relationship with the betting industry, the Gambling Commission issued a statement to reassure customers and fans that the industry will continue to work with the governing body on "sport betting integrity issues".

It appears that the FA has now made its decision to change the way it deals with the sports betting world.

The two parties began a relationship previous year, but the FA has faced pressure in recent months to re-examine its stance on deals with gambling companies after a high-profile case involving Premier League star Joey Barton.

Barton was found to have placed over 1,200 bets on matches between March 26, 2006, and May 13, 2016, which is in direct conflict with strict FA betting rules.

The Football Association has pulled out of a four-year sponsorship deal with Ladbrokes after just one year, following a board decision in May to cut ties with betting companies.

In April, former England worldwide Barton was handed an 18-month ban from the sport after admitting to a misconduct charge related to betting.

It is yet unclear as to whether this will impact football's relationship with gambling as a whole.

"It's very hard and complex, but everyone needs to take a little bit more responsibility - the PFA [Professional Footballers' Association], the players, the FA and the gambling organisations themselves", the 35-year-old said.

There have been concerns of the link between gambling and football, although the lucrative sponsorship deals that companies can offer the organisations and clubs have led to its increased presence in football.

The partnership between Ladbrokes and the FA began in 2016.

Despite the FA's decision, casinos are keen to showcase what their brand has to offer to the English market via sports teams, do don't expect to see domestic teams follow the FA's decision.
