That incident followed two others involving USA fire against pro-regime forces on the ground as they came close to the garrison.

"As a precautionary measure, Australian Defense Force (ADF) strike operations into Syria have temporarily ceased", Australia's Department of Defense said in a statement, adding its operations in Iraq would continue as part of the coalition".

The deconfliction arrangement was first established with Russia in 2015 to avoid unnecessary conflict and miscommunication in the military movements of US-led coalition and Russian forces in Syria. But those bases are isolated - and last week the Syrian regime trumpeted the arrival of its troops on the border for the first time in three years.
