Almost two-thirds of Syrians have been forced to flee their homes.

About 22.5 million people are seeking safety across global borders as refugees, which is the highest number recorded since the UNHCR's founding in 1950 following World War II.

To put the numbers into context, in 2016 one person became displaced every three seconds.

The UN refugee agency reported that "very high" volumes of conflict and persecution is forcing people to flee their homes. In Germany, which vastly expanded its acceptance of people fleeing war from places like Syria, the number of refugees doubled to over 600,000 previous year. There were slightly less internally displaced people in 2016, around 40.3 million, compared to 2015, which had 40.8 million. The war in Syria, now in its seventh year, has created a total of 5.5 million refugees as of 2016.

"These incidents are a reminder of the grave dangers that people confront when forced to flee their countries because of war and persecution", UN High Commissioner spokeswoman Cecile Pouilly said.

Last year South Africa came under the spotlight by the UNHCR for rejecting more refugee applications than any other country globally.

Most of the refugees are women and children, the reason UNICEF is calling the refugee influx "a children's crisis".

Here in the U.S., President Donald Trump issued an executive order temporarily blocking travel from seven (later changed to six) majority-Muslim countries, which has repeatedly been blocked by various courts as discriminatory and is now headed to the U.S. Supreme Court. And almost 70 years after Palestinians first fled today's Israel, some 5.3 million Palestinians are now living as refugees - the highest level ever recorded, the UNHCR said.

He, however, said a detailed discussion would be held on the matter within the JD (U). Yechury said, "Kovind ji was the chief of RSS's Dalit branch".

Jordan is also the seventh-largest refugee-hosting country in the world, with over 735,000 refugees and asylum seekers registered for worldwide protection with UNHCR across 40 nationalities, the statement added. There were great number of asylum-seekers from Syria, since 2012 12 million displaced people have been registered in Syria. Most of all, says bank president Jim Yong Kim, it will "allow refugees to actually have some hope in their lives".

In South Sudan, Grandi said the combination of violence, ethnic strife, lack of development, climatic factors and worldwide neglect was unmatched anywhere in the world.

Children, who make up half the world's refugees, continue to bear a disproportionate burden of the suffering, mainly due to their greater vulnerability. That was more than any other country - even more than the 200,000 people estimated to have fled Syria.

Grandi on Sunday visited South Sudan's largest camp for internally displaced people in the town of Bentiu.

In fact, 84 percent of refugees are hosted in the world's developing regions: Turkey, Pakistan, Lebanon, Iran, Uganda, and Ethiopia are the top hosts, respectively.

And almost 70 years after Palestinians first fled today's Israel, some 5.3 million Palestinians are now living as refugees - the highest level ever recorded, UNHCR said.

If they haven't crossed an global border, the United Nations designates them as "internally displaced persons" or IDPs.
