According to sources, Nitish Kumar and the ruling Janata Dal-United party will support the centre's presidential candidate, breaking ranks with the 18-member bloc of the opposition.

The decision was announced by Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray after a crucial 90-minute meeting with his senior party leaders at his Bandra home. A BJD MP said there could not have been a scenario when the BJD would support a Congress candidate given the fact that the regional party thrived on anti-Congress planks all these years. "For 6 yrs I served alongside Ramnath Kovind ji in the Rajya Sabha, it was his 2nd term & my 1st".

"If someone is trying to make a Dalit a President with the goal of gaining a vote bank then we are not with them", Thackeray said.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to me about the Presidential nominee".

"17 paties came together on the issue of Presidential election and if some parties take a different decision. We have a meeting tomorrow".

It remains to be seen whether BSP, which has also said that it can not oppose a Dalit candidate unless the opposition has a more popular Dalit nominee, attends the opposition meeting. "A large number of regional parties are supporting Kovind and we believe this will continue", he added. He, however, said a detailed discussion would be held on the matter within the JD (U).

The Sun also reports that United are anxious he is just using them to get Madrid to give him a new and improved contract. Ronaldo denies the accusations and is said to be considering a transfer away from Spain.

The RJD supremo had earlier flayed the NDA for not consulting opposition parties and evolve a consensus on the presidential election. "Just because he was the leader of Dalit Morcha of BJP they have made him the candidate", Mamata said.

In his fresh editorial, Tathagata wrote that as BJP is one of its major opposition parties, BJD's decision to support NDA candidate may affect party's position in State.

Yechury said, "Kovind ji was the chief of RSS's Dalit branch". So somewhere it is a political fight or a contest.

The opposition is against Kovind's name being finalised for the post of president on grounds that they were not consulted prior to the announcement.

It has been learned that JD (U) and BSP indicated they were not opposed to Kovind's candidature.

"Our support or opposition is not for a particular person, but on the BJP ideologies".
