Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center examined him last week upon his return to OH and reported that he had severe brain damage and was in a state of unresponsive wakefulness. It says his family objected to an autopsy.

North Korea has selectively permitted consular access to foreigners detained in the North, but it has not allowed it to the South Korean detainees as the two Koreas do not recognize each other as sovereign states, the ministry said.

Warmbier's father, Fred, has praised Trump for helping secure his son's release.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer painted a rosier picture on Tuesday, telling reporters that the United States is continuing to work with China to apply pressure on North Korea and said the U.S. has seen "positive movement" with China.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Anger over Otto Warmbier's fate continued to build Tuesday, with lawmakers declaring his death a "murder" and calling for travel restrictions to North Korea while the Trump administration considered how to respond.

Three US citizens are now being held by North Korea, including two men who taught at a Pyongyang university funded by overseas Christian groups, and a Korean-American pastor who was accused of espionage for the South.

Warmbier's death further worsens tensions between the US and its longtime foe.

Bae said he had had to work long days in the fields doing manual labour, including planting beans and moving coal, a strenuous regime that caused him to lose 27 kilograms (60 pounds) during his period of detention.

The Trump administration doesn't need an act of Congress to bar Americans from traveling to North Korea. "I also urge North Korea to return these people to their families".

"You're in America and you think you can do stuff and there's no consequences, but in North Korea you don't have those same privileges", he said.

Since coming to office Trump has tried to get Beijing to put pressure on its ally Pyongyang to curb its nuclear and missile programmes.

The South Korean news agency reported Pyongyang's state news agency KCNA reported 51 public activities involving Kim Jong Un, and 21 of those activities were related to the military.

In a massive show of force, President Trump has deployed three aircraft carrier groups to the region to front up to the skittish dictatorship. On Monday, he blamed the "brutality of the North Korean regime" for Warmbier's death.

Warmbier, 22, a University of Virginia student, died Monday in Cincinnati, less than a week after his release from North Korea.

Warmbier's doctors say he had severe brain damage but they don't know what caused it. China's state-run media, however, warned that the U.S.'s expectations may be unrealistic and could lead the region to war.

USA spy satellites have detected renewed activity at North Korea's nuclear weapons test site as leaders from the US and China meet to discuss sanctions against Pyongyang, according to two unnamed USA officials cited Wednesday by CNN.

"We have been very forceful in our political and economic pressure and we will continue to apply that", Spicer said.
