Despite tweeting he's under investigation, Trump lawyer says he's not under investigation

When President Donald Trump abruptly fired James Comey last month, he wrote in the former FBI Director's termination letter that he was appreciative of Comey telling him, on three separate occasions, that Trump himself was not under investigation - an assertion Comey confirmed in congressional testimony.

Trump essentially confessed that he fired Comey in order to forestall the Russian Federation investigation, telling NBC News interviewer Lester Holt in nationally televised broadcast that "this Russian Federation thing" was among his motivations for firing Comey. But there are conflicting signals about what is actually happening.

A few days after the "bombshell" Washington Post story claimed that Mueller was looking into whether Trump tried to thwart the FBI's Russia-election-meddling investigation, ABC News reported that there isn't such an investigation.

A USA official who is familiar with the rough outlines of the probe and who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters on Thursday that Mueller was also examining whether Trump or others tried to interfere with the investigation.

"But you know how it works in Washington", Sekulow continued.

Sekulow says that Trump hasn't been notified of any investigation.

Last week I wrote that the biggest danger Trump faces from the special counsel investigation is not the obstruction probe, but Mueller's digging into the finances of Trump's associates. The Post cited multiple unnamed sources familiar with those interview requests.

Any confirmation that Mueller has expanded the investigation to consider whether the President obstructed justice with the Comey firing would carry no guarantee of a guilty finding. He says there should at least be tapes of any telephone conversations between the president and Comey.

Sekulow sidestepped Cuomo's charge, returning to his claim that the president's reasons for firing Comey could not be investigated given that the Federal Bureau of Investigation director serves at the pleasure of the president. The source said investigators have sought information from Richard Ledgett, who recently retired as deputy NSA director and, the source said, had written a memo documenting an attempt from Trump urging Rogers to tamp down on the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

Otto Warmbier dies days after being returned from North Korea
The 22-year-old University of Virginia sophomore honor student went on a five-day trip to #North Korea as a healthy man. Doctors who examined Otto Warmbier after his release said there was no sign of botulism in his system.

That tactic from Trump's lawyers and proxies has manifested itself in aggressively worded statements and television appearances aimed at warding off any legal threat from prosecutors — and persuading the American public the president isn't in legal jeopardy. "The legal team has not been notified", he said on CNN.

President Donald Trump, whose combative instincts are to lash out and never retreat, appears to be shaping a legal team in his own image.

Appearing on a series of morning news programs, attorney Jay Sekulow repeatedly stressed Sunday that "the president has not been and is not under investigation".

"It's possible we will have an answer to that at the end of the week", Spicer said in an off-camera briefing.

"This is an individual as president of the United States, has the social media platform that reaches 107 million people instantaneously with a message", said Sekulow.

Meanwhile, other sources have said that the President is indeed under investigation for the highly unconventional firing of the FBI Chief.

The tweet sparked speculation that Trump may pull a nuclear option by firing Mueller and Rosenstein, a move senior aides have fervently advised against - given that it could provoke a constitutional crisis.

Whether Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will continue to have ultimate oversight of the multi-pronged federal investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election is now something of an open question.
