Tropical system expected in the Gulf of Mexico

A second system near the Yucatan also may become a tropical storm in the next 48 hours, even though the low lacks a well-defined center of circulation. Most of the day turned out fine with dry conditions and some sunshine early, but by late afternoon a few strong storms began bubbling across the area.

An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate this system on Monday, if necessary.

The National Hurricane Center says a disturbance off the Mexican Coast will likely develop into a depression or tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico.

The hurricane season, which doesn't end till November 30, is expected to be rougher than usual, with 11 to 17 named storms likely to strike. It will continue to move northeast over the next several days.

This portion of the Atlantic Basin is an unusual spot for tropical development this early in the season.

Exactly where the system fully organizes will determine its future track. Current observations and satellite data have indicated that a broad low pressure area is centered near the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected over the Windward Islands. "Despite saying to take precautions, I do want to urge that this system has the same chance of hitting Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, or Florida as it has of hitting us".

The main issue is the system hasn't even developed yet, which can cause additional problems for forecasting.

For over a week, the KXAN First Warning Weather team has been monitoring the tropics, as two potential cyclones are developing.
