Friends said she was last seen near Orrell Water Park, where there are two reservoirs surrounded by woodland.

The woman was reported missing yesterday by her family after she failed to return from college.

Greater Manchester police searched the area and discovered a body at about 2.30am on Saturday.

A post-mortem examination has concluded that Ellen had suffered multiple wounds to the neck.

DS Howard Millington, from Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team, described the murder as a "brutal attack" and an "absolute tragedy".

"We have a full investigative team working on this and a large scene is in place in the area around the Orrell Water Park area".

"It is unimaginable what Ellen's family and friends must be going through right now, and my thoughts continue to be with them throughout all of this".

Brroks Koepka wins US Open title
It's the first time since 1998-2000 (Lee Janzen, Payne Stewart and Tiger Woods ) that Americans have won it three straight times. It appeared as though Koepka and Harman were set for a memorable battle when Koepka held a one-stroke lead after the front nine.

In a statement a Winstanley College spokesman said: "We are deeply shocked and mourning the loss of a wonderful young woman, Ellen Higginbottom".

Her father stated that he, as well as his team, will never stop until he finds out what happened to his daughter and justice is served.

The force also confirmed Ellen's family are being supported by specially-trained officers.

GMP said it is leaving no stone unturned in the investigation and asked for the public to get in touch if they had seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area on Friday or in the days before. "Don't worry that you'll be wasting my time, any bit of information, no matter how small could be vital".

His address is now being searched and there is a large police presence in the area. "If you have any concerns, please speak to our officers", Millington said.
