"The fact of the matter is the president has not been and is not under investigation".

Benjamin Wittes, who runs the Lawfare blog and is known to be a friend of James Comey, said in a new interview that President Trump's private dinner with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director amounted to "grotesque impropriety". Mr Sekulow added: "The president issued that tweet on social media because of the report in the Washington Post from five anonymous sources none of which, of course, anyone knows about, alleging that the president was under investigation in this purported expanded probe".

"The president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction", attorney Jay Sekulow said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

Although media reports might confuse you, Donald Trump is not now under investigation by the Justice Department.

"So there can be no confusion".

One of President Trump's lawyers insisted on Sunday that a tweet in which he wrote of "being investigated" did not confirm that he was, in fact, under investigation, as senators of both parties suggested the probe will run for many more months whether Trump is unhappy about it or not.

Barak Cohen, a former Justice Department lawyer and now a defense attorney specialising in white-collar crime and investigations, said there was no requirement that the special counsel notify Trump he was under investigation, so the lack of such notice meant nothing.

"I don't appreciate you putting words in my mouth when I've been crystal clear that the president is not and has not been under investigation", he said.

The low scoring suggested the 11-year-old course was a cream puff, hardly the USGA's idea of the ultimate test in golf . Well, not exactly. "If I could do it over again, I'd play baseball-100 percent, no doubt", he says.

"So the president responds - I want to be crystal clear here".

On Twitter Friday, Trump wrote as part of a tweet about the probe that "I am being investigated".

A United States official who is familiar with the rough outlines of the probe and who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters on Thursday that Mueller was also examining whether Trump or others tried to interfere with the investigation.

Even as he denied any investigation, Sekulow made references to an obstruction of justice investigation during his Fox News Sunday interview, prompting expressions of incredulity from host Chris Wallace. Following Comey's remarks, the Times said their "original sources could not immediately be reached".

"The president is not under investigation by the special counsel."
And the next day, I called [reporter] Mike Schmidt, and I told him I had additional information for him. Rosenstein told the Senate Appropriations Committee last week that only he himself could cashier the special counsel, and "As long as I'm in this position, he's not going to be fired without good cause". Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

Wallace leaped at him for that: You just admitted that the special counsel is investigating Trump after claiming that there is no investigation!

Trump referred to the "witch hunt" again in a series of tweets Sunday, saying in one missive that "the MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".
