Explosion rocks Herat province of Afghanistan; 7 dead, 15 injured

The Jamiat leader went on to say that the recent spate of deadly incidents in Kabul showed that security institutions were not able to secure the Afghan people.

The Taliban have denied involvement in the May 31 attack at diplomatic enclave that left 90 people dead and more than 400 others injured. The president did not explain the sharp increase. Another 15 were wounded in the bombing which took place outside a mosque in the western city.

The bomb detonated early in the morning in one of the busiest parts of town, near big supermarkets and shops, where streets were packed with commuters including children going to school. The blast shattered windows at the presidential palace, while Ghani was inside, The New York Times reports. All of those killed were Afghans, and Ghani paid specific homage to 13 policemen who stopped the truck as it tried to enter the fortified district and were killed in the blast. "One hopes this meeting today in Kabul provides more clarity from Washington", said Davood Moradian, director of the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies in Kabul. The city's police chief said some demonstrators fired weapons in the direction of his men.

As The Two-Way has reported, the explosion prompted protests and calls for Ghani and other top government officials to step down over the security lapse. He said the explosions came from a trio of suicide bombers and demanded an investigation into how the attackers were able to get so close to a funeral attended by senior government officials.

The militants have said no talks are possible until all foreign troops leave.

Ghani said Pakistan was waging an "undeclared war" against Afghanistan. "By now that illusion should be finished". But instead of drawing down, the United States is weighing a request to increase the number of US troops in the country by up to 5,000, in addition to the 8,500 already deployed in advisory and support roles.

It was one of the deadliest attacks in the country since the start of the war in Afghanistan in 2001, which was triggered by the United States invasion is search of 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden.

"As [British] Prime Minister [Theresa] May recently said, 'Enough is enough, ' " Ghani said. It is also a reminder for US President Donald Trump to make a clear policy decision regarding future of US engagement in Afghanistan. They agreed that working together is essential to stop the cycle of violence, he said.
