Brooks Koepka wins US Open title

"It was really cool", Stricker told reporters about the stirring support he received all week and the final hole ovation at the state's first hosting of a U.S. Open."Yeah, I don't get those very often". He proved such a trembling mess that he birdied No. 14, birdied No. 15, birdied No. 16 and sprinted from the others.

"That's awesome", Koepka said. Hopefully though, in future majors I can play in the last or next to last group to give myself a better chance.

Koepka shot a final-round five-under 67 to top left-hander Brian Harman and Japanese sensation Hideki Matsuyama by four shots.

Tommy Fleetwood of England finished fourth at 277.

Koepka moved to 14-under with a birdie at the par-5 14th hole.

By the time Matsuyama - six behind at the start of the final round - rolled in his eighth birdie of the day on the 18th, he was just one adrift of Koepka, who had five holes still to complete.

Rickie Fowler, urged on by the biggest galleries at Erin Hills, turned in a scrappy outward nine mixing two birdies with a bogey to sit three back of the leader. It's the first time that has happened since 1998-2000.

Q. It was you and Brooks for 12 and 13 holes back and forth.

Si Woo Kim, the 21-year-old Players Championship victor who began a compelling three shots off the lead, shot 75 and finished at a commendable 6 under par. Harman bogeyed his second straight hole at 13 to fall two shots behind Koepka. Harman ended up closing with a bogey.

The surgeon on Friday said he was "a lot more confident and optimistic" about Scalise's recovery than he was two days ago. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.

"It gives you a good grounding", Fleetwood said. It lets you be aggressive, you can get on runs where you can make birdies. "I just didn't have it today". I had an opportunity today and I didn't get it done.

Adam Scott (72-75) on Tuesday: "Obviously, I've seen guys talking about the rough and the hay and this and that, and of course it's a huge penalty if you miss big this week. I just think Brooks went out and won the tournament".

Koepka is a close friend and training partner of world number one and 2016 US Open champion Dustin Johnson.

On the eve of Sunday's final round, Johnson called Koepka, who began Sunday a stroke off the lead, to offer some advice. Then a 17-footer on 16 for his third birdie in a row.

"After that, it was kind of lights out", Harman said. The dominance of the final round shook up what had been a crowded leaderboard throughout the weekend, and his first-time victor status continued a streak we've seen in majors that dates back to Jason Day's breakthrough at the 2015 PGA Championship.

"That's probably one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and to do it on Father's Day, it's pretty neat", Koepka said after his round. "I didn't exactly get my dad a card, so this works".

The world No 5, who carded a four-over 76 on Saturday, finished with a score of one over but was full of compliments for the challenge posed by the USGA at the second major of the year.

Brian Harman's chance to become the first left-hander to win the US Open slipped away early on the back nine. Only four left-handers-Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir and Bob Charles-have won major championships. The 25-year-old Matsuyama had two of the best rounds of the tournament - he shot 65 on Friday - but a 2-over 74 in his opening round loomed large as the scores got lower and lower at a forgiving Erin Hills.

Q. Do you think it's because you have people like Rory (McIlroy) and Jordan (Spieth) who have come along?
